THE PRAYING MANTIS

The Praying Mantis is a tiny insect resembling some prehistoric monster or mythical dragon but it possesses some alarming qualities. It can lift 24 times it's own body weight. In human terms, this would mean a man of 120 pounds being able to easily shoulder a ton. The praying mantis is carnivorous by nature, even consuming their own kind. During the act of mating, the female will turn her head around, not only killing the male, but devouring him as well, digesting him bit by bit.

Before Wu Tang was a household name, Saturday morning cartoons would give way to Kung Fu theater in the afternoon. I was always intrigued by the different fighting techniques that mimicked different animals and insects like Tiger Style and Eagle Fist. My favorite was Mantis Style aka Praying Mantis Kung Fu.

Fast forward to the summer of 2019 when Sneed The Jade Badger brought up that kung fu tape I always talk about making. A couple days later I came home and found a large praying mantis perched above my apartment door. Soon after, the COVID lockdown hit and I found myself with time on my hands and no excuses so I started pouring through old VHS tapes and DVD's and filled my SP-404SX with samples for what would become The Deadly Mantis.
